Frequently Asked Questions
1. Is this for “newbie” or “experienced” novelists?
A Zero2Novel membership is aimed at writers who are looking for ways to write better novels, faster. The majority of the members so far have been unpublished writers, but the course has information that can benefit both beginning and intermediate novelists.
2. Does this book focus on any particular genre?
Absolutely not! The majority of the techniques in this course can be used by anyone writing fiction, regardless of the genre. It does lean more towards “genre fiction,” and away from straight “literature”. (Yes, I hate those terms, too!) The plotting techniques are designed to help you increase the drama and tension in your story—two things certain to keep a reader turning pages—and may be seen as focused toward the thriller or action novels, but this isn’t true. Every good story has these elements. Why else would anyone read it? Depending on the genre of novel you are writing, you may place more emphasis on certain aspects, but the techniques will help, regardless.
3. Are there any “hidden costs” in addition to my membership fees?
Not directly. The course does not require you to buy any other books, software, pens or stationary, though a healthy supply of index cards and a binder will be helpful. What you choose to write in will be your choice.
4. Do I have to commit to the entire 4 months?
Of course not. While I don’t think that you’ll want to do so, you may cancel anytime you want. You may either email me through the Contact Us link to the left of this page, or cancel the subscription through PayPal. But I don’t think you’ll want to after diving into the training!
5. Can I really get a first draft written in a month?
Yes. Though it may not be exactly as you are thinking of it. If you commit to just 30 minutes a day for the first 30 days, you will have a very thorough map of your entire story that covers all of the major emotions and plots of your story. From here, you’ll be able to easily see what needs to change before you flesh in the missing pieces.
6. Is this just some course on how to outline?
Absolutely not! While the “first draft” that you’ll end up with might be seen as a very loose outline, this course is not about outlining. There are no structured Headings and Subheads! Instead, you will find a way to have fun with the “first creation” of your story. Lessons #3 and #4 will go into this part in detail.
7. How quickly can I get a finished manuscript?
Unfortunately, I can’t tell you that. That depends entirely on how much quality time you put into writing. If you can dedicate more than 30 minutes per day after the first month, you will get it done faster. If you are unable to—don’t worry, it happens to us all!—it will take longer. How long it takes is entirely up to you, but I’ll be sending you more advice and encouragement throughout the entire four months.
8. On what day of the week will I receive my weekly emails?
There isn’t a set “day” of the week when lessons will arrive to your inbox. The autoresponder is setup to send out your lesson approximately every 7 days (sometimes there is a 24-48 hour difference in delivery, but you’ll always receive a lesson each week.)
